Americans know how to do sporting events.
Jonathan and I dearly missed sporting events when we lived in India. We faithfully followed the Indian national cricket team on television but the thought of squeezing into a 40,000 seat stadium with 60,000 of our fellow fans didn't exactly thrill us. So when Jonathan's dad mentioned going to an Atlanta Braves game this spring, we jumped on it.
From the moment we walked in the stadium, the atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation. Everything was Braves- from the baseballs playing in the band to the overpriced fan shop to the $4.25 bottle of coke (that we didn't even get to keep the cap from). We were treated to a fun game between the Braves and the Mets. There were 25 hits between the two teams and no errors. The best moment of the game was when Kelly Johnson came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th inning. He hit a 2 out, 3-2 pitch out of the park for a GRAND SLAM. Awesome. It really doesn't get much better than that. And he has a cool name.
So I'm officially back on the Braves bandwagon. I haven't paid much attention to them in many years- probably since the Four Aces (remember them???). But this is fun and man, its been a long time coming.

I love baseball games! I do miss the Rangers (even though they are not the best, they are the home team!). We are going to a Braves game in a couple of weeks. I can't wait!
AHHH! I watched that game and I was SO wishing I was there. I love the Braves (I'm sure you remember my late-nights staying up to watch them when we were in HV). Wasn't it raining the entire time though? Let me know if you want to go to another game...we were just talking about going again, we went to one last year together and had so much fun! I'm officially jealous of you!
Fun!! I almost got to see a Braves game once... I was on a bicycle trip and we were going to end in Atlanta and watcha game... the last day of our long trip...I was in a bike wreck and saw the game from my hospital room... so sad...
So why didn't you get to keep the cap??
So in India now they are starting cricket teams in all the big cities - I think they're about 10 or so teams... all the big bollywood stars are buying the teams... but now there will be a lot more games and a lot more games in Delhi... so it might be fun! Hopefully!!
Oh man I'm SO excited to go to a ball game - Astros of course. We can talk trash to each other. :)
E-Rob -- We went to a couple of Astros games last year. They have a nice stadium. But now that we are back in NOVA, it's all about the Nats. :)
erin- it drizzled on and off the whole game but never rained really hard. Our seats were under one of the awnings so we were dry the whole time!
sar- why does that story not surprise me??? I don't know why- they would open your bottle for you and keep the cap. They never even gave it to us. That is really exciting about all the cricket teams- we really wanted to go but had heard its kinda go at your own risk. I hope they will make the new teams/stadiums more friendly.
e-rob- I so want to talk trash with you. That makes me giggle.
I don't like baseball on television nor do I keep up with any particular team, but I actually like going to games for the atmosphere. Brian's company gets box seats for the Riverdogs. I know it is minor league, but the games are still fun. :)
I am glad you guys had a great time watching the Braves play. Even though I don't really follow them, I like to hear they are doing well. My dad loves to tell the story that when I was 6, we went to a Braves game. When we stood for the 7th inning stretch, I was very mad to discover the game wasn't over. lol
ahhh a post about sports. as much as I love the atmosphere and junk food of a baseball game, I am a litte bleary-eyed after reading this. phrases like pinch hit bottom of the 7th something just sort of swim in front of my face.
but it does sound like a fun outing - when the padres are in town, let us know and I'm sure mark will be all over that game!
andrea and kelley - the reason they take the cap is so that you can't throw a full (read: heavy) bottle onto the players. isn't it sad that (they think) they have to do that? I think those rules came about after a big NBA flight a couple of years ago (you must have been in india, kelley). andrea, your story about the hospital makes my HAIL seem tame! way to put things in perspective!
a.magner- I commented to j that I would be content if baseball games were 7 innings long. He told me to go watch softball.
erin g.- crazy people.
