Kiran tidbits

Doesn't every girl have a picture wearing her mother's heels?

Doesn't everyone wear their heels to brush their teeth in the morning?

*************************************************************************

Maybe you go to Target too much when you almost-20-month-old starts chanting "Target" as soon as you make the left turn into the parking lot.

**************************************************************************

Kiran has learned the power of "Hey!" She says hey to every person we see in every store. If they don't respond, she'll continue saying it louder and louder. Thankfully most people are very gracious and talk to her but it wears me out.

For Alicia

Alicia requested a belly picture so here I am in all my 30 weeks of glory. What scares me is that this baby will double in size before she is born. Where will she go??? I am carrying really high and actually its causing some wardrobe trouble. My bridesmaid's dress for Will's wedding (in 3.5 weeks) is a beautiful black two piece maternity dress. It has a ribbon that is supposed to lay on top of my belly. Well.....I don't have room on top of my belly. My belly starts before my boobs stop. So it looks really awkward and bunched up. The seamstress didn't want to alter it yet because she said if my baby drops any, it will fit perfectly. If she doesn't drop....well the seamstress will be doing some magic the week of the wedding. So pray my baby will drop. I didn't mention to her that Kiran didn't drop until I was in active labor at 38 weeks because hey every pregnancy is different right?!?!

I updated my book lists on the side. I loved the Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers. I really like historical fiction and those were very well written and interesting. They made me think- about my faith in today's world and the faith of believers in the first century. Has anyone read The Alchemist? That was a very easy but intriguing read for me. I feel like I need to go back and read it again to fully grasp all the symbolism and hidden meanings. I have a biography and a young adult novel waiting for me at the library. I really like to mis up my genres- keeps it interesting.

A Busy Week

We try very hard to guard our time so that we can do the things we need to do and want to do well and not be stretched in too many directions. Sometimes though life is just busy. Last week J was out of town for a few days and then Kiran & I spent a few days in the mountains. We've had playdates and baby showers and out of town guests. We've had fun but I like seeing all the open space on my calendar the next few days. I love being able to just pick up and go to the park whenever the sun is shining.

We kicked off our busy week by going to see my brother-in-law in a Harley Davidson fashion show.

Yes that is my sister's husband modeling a Harley Davidson jacket. He looked like he was really comfortable up there modeling. Maybe he's hit on something.

After the fashion show, Kiran & I headed downtown for Artisphere with my parents, Will & Lauren. We wandered through all the art enjoying the pieces and gasping at the prices. We ate on the little plaza beside what used to be Carpenter Bros Drugstore. Kiran is obsessed with buses right now and every time the trolley came through she would yell "A BUS!" So after dinner we hopped on the trolley intending to get off near an ice cream place. 45 minutes later (downtown Greenville isn't that big y'all) we were dropped off at the front door of the new gelato place. The gelato was wonderful. Its right down from Barley's on Washington. Yum.

looking out THE BUS

Will & Lauren- married in 26 days!

You Earned It

You definitely earned the right to hear my embarrassing story. I had no idea that would turn into so much fun. I have read those stories many times and laughed so hard..... so here goes...

*disclaimer: I never said this was the most embarrassing story. It happens to be MY most embarrassing moment. However, I realize it pales in comparison with some of your stories but nevertheless, I will share. I was like Erin G and EMU and I've always had a hard time coming up with an answer for that question. Now I have one.

Last Tuesday night, we were at a meeting for a church plant that we were helping with. Jonathan, about 15 other adults, and I were brainstorming out loud ways to let the community know about the new church. J & I were sitting in the very back and I decided to throw my two cents in. I yelled out "Mouth-to-Mouth!" The room exploded. I remember hearing someone say "We aren't that kind of church." I couldn't look at anyone for a long time and my face turned as pink as my shirt. I was going for word of mouth which someone had already said but I unfortunately did not notice. Then everyone started yelling at me not to go into labor. Remember I was 26 years old not in middle school.

The best part is that later in the week we were meeting with the church planter and another guy from the team and the church planter totally brought it up. He said he kept laughing every time he thought of me yelling out Mouth-to-Mouth. I told him that he should name his marketing strategy that.

So there you have it. My most embarrassing moment thus far.

Embarrassing Moment and a Question

So 6 people have fessed up to their most embarrassing moments. If you haven't read the comments on the previous post, you really need to take some time to read them. They are hilarious. 4 more people need to spill their guts and I'll tell. I find it a little ironic that some of the people who got so mad at me not sharing the first time haven't shared theirs yet. 4 more!

This question is for those of you who have Facebook (but not Dad because he somehow claims he accidentally set up a Facebook account). What do you do when someone asks to be your friend but you don't remember them? You have mutual friends and maybe even a common school but you don't have any recollection of them? Do you accept their friend request or not?

Here's the Deal

I wasn't planning on blogging about my embarrassing experience......

.... but I've decided if 10 of you will bear your souls and share your most embarrassing experience, then I will share what happened with the world wide web.

If not, it will remain a secret between me and the other 15 people in the room.

You can leave it in the comments or you can put it on your blog and leave a link the comments. 10 or no. Deal?

Magazine Rack

About 6 months ago I found this magazine rack in a decorating magazine and fell in love with it.

But the magazine didn't give any details for where to get that. I scoured the web to no avail. Then my Pottery Barn catalog arrived last week....

Beautiful. Gorgeous. $119! Holy cow. So my question is where can I find a magazine rack like this for cheaper? Or is it possible that someone knows how to make one (that's the part of my brain that lived in India)??? Thanks for your help!

Updates

1. Dad is home! One cardiologist said he had a major heart attack, one said he had a small heart attack. Today he met with the cardiologist who did his heart cath and he said that the main artery that was blocked was because of a blood clot. He had the blood clot then everything got caught up around it forming the blockage very quickly. Whatever happened, I am thankful Dad is still with us. God's not done with him yet!!!

2. I don't usually do garage sales but I broke my rule on Saturday. Our neighborhood had one and some neighbors that I hadn't met yet were out. I ventured over there with Kiran and introduced myself. They are great and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better. BUT the best part was that they sold me four little people sets- Noah's Ark, Carnival, the Zoo, and the Christmas Village - for $3. Total. Each of those retails for $20-$30 in stores. Kiran has been in Little People Heaven.

3. I thought I had three things to blog about but I can't remember the third now. Oh well. Good night!

Dad

Update on Dad- he's doing really well. He was moved to a regular room and out of the CCU today. They cut him loose of most of his medical contraptions that were tying him down so he's up and about. He had lots of visitors today so he got to tell his dramatic story over and over again. He is feeling really well and in great spirits. He's looking forward to going home on Monday hopefully.

After Dad's heart cath on Friday, Mom & I helped get him settled back into his room. Erin returned so Mom & I left to get Mom some food and go by Dad's office for a few things (not work related!). While we were gone, the nurses sent Erin to the waiting room so they could remove his catheter. The catheter was in a main artery so the nurse has to apply tremendous pressure to get it to clot since they had given Dad so many blood thinners, etc. While she's applying the pressure, my Dad looks up and sees his blood pressure is like 89 over 50 and the numbers are red. About that time, he tells her that he doesn't feel to well. Then he's gone. She tries to use the call button but of course his aren't working. She starts yelling for this medicine that will help but she can't move because the blood hadn't clotted yet. Finally she had to call Code 500 which had the doctors and nurses come running from the ICU, through the waiting room where Erin is sitting and into the CCU. Dad comes to with about 8 nurses all over him- one on him doing compressions. He asked them where they all came from. Evidently his heart stopped for about 30 seconds but he came right back.

Today he was moved to his regular room and at one point asked the nurse about removing all this tape he had on him .She kept talking about how much tape there was and how it was way too much. He explained how they had put it on when he crashed yesterday. She stopped and stared at him and said, "That was YOU? Oh we've heard about you."

Dad tends to make a name for himself wherever he goes. I guess we should have expected it.

Thanks for all your prayers and support. You guys are great.

Miracle

The cardiologist retrieved us from the waiting room and took us into the doctor's "lounge." He turned and said to my mom, "I don't usually call people who have had a major heart attack lucky, but your husband is a very lucky man."

***************************

Last night, my dad was out riding his bike as he normally does on nice days. After pedaling up a decent hill, he began to have some slight chest pain. He proceeded to bike home and then tell my mom. They gave him an aspirin and waited a few minutes, debating whether or not to go to the ER. They finally decided to go and drove about 4 minutes over the hill to the closet ER. They knew this hospital did not keep heart patients but they were kinda thinking he'd get checked out and be sent home. They walked in the ER, uttered the words "chest pain" and were quickly ushered to the back. The tests were coming back normal but the doctor decided to go ahead and treat him with aspirin, heparin, and something else I keep forgetting. He wanted my dad to go ahead and get checked out by a cardiologist so dad needed to be transferred downtown. Of course this meant an ambulance ride for dad which he balked at "Can't I drive myself downtown?" He had an uneventful ride with no siren and no flashing lights to the hospital downtown where my mom, dad and sister got to wait around for the cardiologist.

By the time Dad arrived downtown, his enzymes had turned positive which meant heart damage. Still dad never rated the pain above a 4 on a 1-10 scale and no other symptoms. He saw the cardiologist around 12:30am who wanted to do a heart cath but didn't feel it was urgent so he scheduled one for the afternoon. Dad was admitted to the CCU but was feeling pretty good and was in good spirits when mom and Erin left about 3am.

My mom and sister went back up to the hospital when visiting hours started at 10am. My sister and I switched off about 12:45. They started the heart cath about 1:30pm. One of my parents' good friends, Ken, waited with us and around 2:15 my aunt and uncle showed up from Aiken. They decided they didn't want to work today and Dad was a good excuse to come up. The dr came to get us around 2:30pm. Instead of meeting in the little conference room, he wanted to take us to the dr's lounge so he could show us some pictures.

That should have been our first clue.

What happened next was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Its hard for me to accurately convey the emotion in the room. The dr wanted to show us the pictures because the blockage in the arteries in dad's heart was so severe. In fact, this is the kinda of blockage that people typically drop dead from. Dad had two arteries that were 99.9% blocked. The dr showed us all the pictures of dad's heart which he couldn't make heads or tails of. He pulled one picture up and said, "When this picture came on the screen in the room full of people who do this for a living, the room fell silent." The dr said the treatment given at the ER last night very well might have saved Dad's life. This is the same thing that Jim Fixx died from in 1984. The difference between him and my dad (except the obvious that my dad survived) is that Jim's family had a history of heart disease. My dad's doesn't.

Anyhow, the cardiologist put two stints in dad's arteries and that is the only procedure that will be done. It was all over before we even knew to be worried or scared. Now dad will remain in the hospital over the weekend and then will work with the doctor's to reduce the chances of this happening again. The cardiologist said its easier when this happens to a patient who is a sloppy pig. He can quickly point out lifestyle habits that are contributing to the condition. But my dad already exercises regularly and eats pretty healthy.

After taking all this in, Mom and I got to visit with Dad after he was resettled in his room in the CCU. We began conversing and quickly realized that he didn't remember the doctor talking to him post-procedure. Then began one of the most humbling, life-altering moments of my life. Mom and I began to tell Dad all the doctor had said. But how do you convey to someone that there isn't a medical reason why they are still alive? How do you tell your dad that he came within inches of death? It was easier telling it from this side: the side that says you were inches from death, but instead you are full of life. Praise God.

I get emotional when I think about what could have been. I hear God telling me that He doesn't dwell in the almost. He is- present tense. And I am very, very thankful.

Wednesday's Five

  1. As of Monday, I am officially in my third trimester! This pregnancy is going by way faster than my first one.
  2. I easily passed my 3 hour glucose test this morning. It wasn't terrible but its not something I hope I ever have to repeat. And I'm very thankful that I don't have gestational diabetes. The other two women that weren't there weren't so lucky. One of the women even had a 19 month old girl and was expecting another girl in July. What are the odds?
  3. Jonathan finished his first term of his MBA last week. We are really enjoying this week off before he starts term 2 next week.
  4. Over the past few days, I've read books 1, 2 & half of 3 of the Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers. Those are good books y'all. I admit the first one starts a little slow b/c she has to do a lot of background introducing of
  5. I've started the great switcharoo of Grant's room. I've cleaned out most of the things that were stored there and am ready to begin girlying up the room. Think pink and green!

Side Dishes

I am finally getting a system down for our dinners that is both simple and yummy. But I really struggle with side dishes. I feel like I just open a can of veggies and there you go. So I'm asking you for suggestions of good side dishes that you actually make for dinner.

Some of the ones that we have regularly are
1. tossed salad
2. green beans with beef bullion cube
3. corn
4. creamed corn
5. peas
6. black bean salad

And some we have occasionally when I remember to fix them
1. baked beans
2. steamed broccoli
3. coleslaw

I'm pretty sure I'm in a RUT. Help, please?

Atlanta Braves

Americans know how to do sporting events.

Jonathan and I dearly missed sporting events when we lived in India. We faithfully followed the Indian national cricket team on television but the thought of squeezing into a 40,000 seat stadium with 60,000 of our fellow fans didn't exactly thrill us. So when Jonathan's dad mentioned going to an Atlanta Braves game this spring, we jumped on it.

From the moment we walked in the stadium, the atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation. Everything was Braves- from the baseballs playing in the band to the overpriced fan shop to the $4.25 bottle of coke (that we didn't even get to keep the cap from). We were treated to a fun game between the Braves and the Mets. There were 25 hits between the two teams and no errors. The best moment of the game was when Kelly Johnson came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th inning. He hit a 2 out, 3-2 pitch out of the park for a GRAND SLAM. Awesome. It really doesn't get much better than that. And he has a cool name.

So I'm officially back on the Braves bandwagon. I haven't paid much attention to them in many years- probably since the Four Aces (remember them???). But this is fun and man, its been a long time coming.

Ants

As of yesterday, we have ants in our DISHWASHER. Not in our sink or on our counters. In. The. Dishwasher. Gross.

I ran the empty dishwasher with vinegar yesterday but that only worked for about 20 minutes. Today there have only been a few but I bought Borax at Target to get them if they come back. The weird thing is they aren't on the dirty dishes. They are just wandering around the bottom and up the sides on the door. Ugh.
