Another one...
On the drive home from Virginia last week, we sang a bunch of songs. After a particularly rousing rendition of Elmo's World, a small voice piped up from the back seat and said, "Today's Sesame Street was brought to you by the letter K and the number 22!"

Potty Training
I dreaded potty training. I was imagining puddles, racing to the toilet, pulling over on the side of the road, gobs of laundry. Not my idea of a good time.
I finally realized that I needed to get on my game because my daughter was ready. I had heard good things about 3 Day Potty Training so I bought the ebook and took the plunge.
I don't think I'm Supermom and I realize that this method will almost definitely not work for any of my other children but it worked so well for Kiran. She had already gone on the potty both ways so this method trained her to recognize her body's signs. The bulk of the work was done in one morning.
I would recommend actually buying the ebook for a few reasons. I thought I knew what it would say, and I did know most of it, but there were a few key ideas that I think really mattered. For example, you never ask the child if they need to go potty but instead you remind them to tell you when they need to go. It puts the responsibility on them to learn when they need to go. It also gave me the confidence to try to go without diapers at naps and nighttime even though Kiran had not been waking dry. Kiran started off beautifully at nights and naptimes. We've had a few setbacks but she's bounced back. When she was fighting off an illness a few weeks ago (remember when she was taking those long naps?) she was waking up wet every morning, even when I took her potty right before I went to bed. I *almost* put her back in diapers for nighttime. I really wondered if I had pushed too hard or was expecting too much. I contacted the ebook's author and she gave me a few tips to try plus the encouragement that illness really can cause a setback and sure enough Kiran went right back to staying dry. That's the biggest reason I suggest buying the ebook- you get access to the author. I contacted her twice with two different problems. I received timely advice that worked both times.
Kiran has done really well lately with few accidents but TODAY was a big milestone. This morning around 5 am, Kiran got up and went to the potty on her own before she wet the bed! Normally she sleeps all night and wakes up dry but today was the first time she went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She sat on the toilet and yelled until I came but she avoided an accident. I'm so incredibly proud of her.
There's our potty training story. I'll be glad to answer any questions you have about our experience. I just wanted to throw out another method of potty training that worked for us.

My Eye Doctors
On Wednesday I had my follow-up visit with the eye doctor. I was assured that it would only take 10-15 minutes max and that I could certainly bring my girls with me.
Right.
So I packed up my two-year-old, my seven-month-old, the Legos, the scarf that S loves, the markers that only color on the special coloring book, the coloring book that said markers color on, a few more things for S to put in her mouth, S's blanket, my contacts, and me. We arrived and plopped down in the waiting area. About two minutes later, or just enough time for the girls to unpack everything, the nice girl calls us back. We go to the back waiting room and she watches us unpack all our stuff on the floor and then asks me two questions. Then asks us to move into the exam room. Really? You couldn't have asked me those two questions in there?
So we pick up everything and move into the exam room. The girl smiles and asks me, "How old is your baby?" I tell her 7 months and she smiles shyly. She tells me she just found out she and her husband are going to have a baby. Like yesterday found out. Oh, I see legos and potties and slobbery kisses in your future. Its quite a ride.
The eye doctor comes in and says, "So did the contacts not work for you?"
What gave it away? The fact I was wearing my glasses?
"What was the main problem?" he inquired.
"They made me want to rip my eyes out."
So now I'm trying a pair of contacts that are comfortable yet not my right prescription. And this week I'll pick up other ones that are my right prescription but perhaps not as comfortable. I'm very tempted to just get a new pair of glasses for crying out loud.
(Did I mention that we were in there an hour? And- can I brag a bit?- the girls were wonderful. Like much better than they are at home. I'm thinking of becoming a stay-at-the-eye-doctor's-mom.)
And the next morning when I was putting my contacts in, Kiran said, "Mommy you have your eye doctors in your eyes?"

This afternoon we kept checking outside to see if the rain had turned to snow. Once it finally did, Kiran disappeared for a few quiet minutes. When she returned, she announced she was ready to go out in the snow!
By our last official check (which is taking the ruler out to measure the snow on the deck rails), we have 4.25 inches and its still coming down hard! Snow day tomorrow. Which of course is the same as every other day... just with snow.

Who Are You?
I'm not really sure what happened to my girls this week.
Kiran, who has been on a nap strike since November, has taken a 2-3 hour nap almost every day this week. I woke her up at 4pm today after she slept 3 hours and 15 minutes so that she would go to bed tonight! Who are you???
And Sienna has just been....well....happy. She's been so content to just sit and play with toys. When she fusses, I just pick her up and move her to another spot with different toys and she's content once again. Its been so....wonderful. Who are you???

Scenes from the Beach
The first night we were at the beach, we went out to eat at a seafood restuarant near our condo. Kiran convinced Mimi to take her to the little girls' room. Kiran ran back into our dining area and yelled, "I WENT POTTY!" Two of the tables beside us burst into applause.

Same restaurant, I was standing up holding Sienna since she didn't want us to sit down with her. A man at the next table was making conversation. Then he asked me AS I'M HOLDING MY NOT YET 6 MONTH OLD BABY if we were already expecting another one. Wow. No just the baby weight from this one thank you. Geesh.

The last night we ate at K&W cafeteria. The girls were the hit of the restuarant. Every person in line talked to them and Kiran captured quite an audience as she ate. A lady came up to us near the end of our meal and said, "You must be very proud of her," while pointing at Kiran. We all kind of nodded. Kiran had been on her best behavior mostly because of the Jello and I was proud of her. The lady continued, "She sure can eat a lot of food." Yes, yes she can.

Ok I had a request for a potty training post so I'll do that one. Maybe a cloth diaper one? Any other requests?

Caskey Cousins
Last month we were in Lancaster for Jonathan's grandmom's funeral. After the service, the church brought a huge lunch for all the family back at the house.

Making Mommy Happy
After reading a story, tucking Kiran in and singing a few songs, I leaned in to give her a kiss.

Sienna is wearing the My First Christmas pjs that I wore 27 years ago! She has to wear them now because she'll prob outgrow them by Christmas (to be fair- I was born in Sept and she was born in July).

Polka Dots
As I changed Sienna's first diaper of the day, Kiran ran to Sienna's room and picked out an outfit for Sienna "all by self." I couldn't refuse her so this is the outfit that Sienna wore on the day her sister picked her clothes out.

Saying the Blessing
Usually we say the blessing "God is great, God is good...." before our meals. Kiran prays along with us getting some of the words right. Today I let her say her own blessing before lunch. She said,

Pumpkins, Apples and Chick-Fil-A
A few weeks ago, we headed up the mountain to Hendersonville to pick out a pumpkin, get some apples and of course eat at Chick-Fil-A. We took our own personal photographer with us to document the occasion. Ok not really. Our friend Mandi did come with us and she took lots of pictures with her film camera. I haven't seen one of those in ages.

Memories of Our Trip to NC
- We stayed one night with Katie and Noah. Kiran kept calling Noah "Paul" (he kinds looks like a Paul she knows). We told her that his name was Noah. She said ok and from then on called him "Moses"
- Kiran also called a 5 day old baby "Baby Jesus"
- While Kiran was up in the play car in the Chick-fil-a playground, one of the 5 year old twins came in and said, "Hey! You're cute!" I looked at Katie and asked if my two year old had just been hit on at CFA....
- Playing Wii for the first time- I played bowling. J played bowling, boxing and golf. Very fun.
-I stayed up waaaaay tooooooo late talking to Erin Thursday night. Its painful even to think about now. But it was fun while it happened.

A Few Questions For My People
1. Mommies of girls- bangs or no bangs? And if you chose to grow those bangs out, how did you survive?
2. Did anyone have a bumbo seat? Did you like it? Does anyone have one sitting around that they aren't using that we could try?
3. Potty training??? Oh my. I'm so not ready but I think I need to start thinking about it. Or something. Anything that worked for you???
4. Anyone have an infant Halloween costume? I'm having a hard time spending money on something Sienna will wear for like an hour and have no memory of. Its really just for the pictures.

Sunset
About two-tenths of a mile from our house is a farm that we've bought many fresh fruits and vegetables from this summer. If you drive past at just the right time of day, you can see an incredible sunset over the farm with the silos silhouetted in the fading light. Last night as Kiran and I drove back from CVS, we caught it just right. The sky was ablaze with oranges and purples and pinks. I pointed it out to Kiran and told her how beautiful I thought it was and all. Kiran looked at it and said, "Wow. I colored it."
