I dreaded potty training. I was imagining puddles, racing to the toilet, pulling over on the side of the road, gobs of laundry. Not my idea of a good time.
I finally realized that I needed to get on my game because my daughter was ready. I had heard good things about 3 Day Potty Training so I bought the ebook and took the plunge.
I don't think I'm Supermom and I realize that this method will almost definitely not work for any of my other children but it worked so well for Kiran. She had already gone on the potty both ways so this method trained her to recognize her body's signs. The bulk of the work was done in one morning.
I would recommend actually buying the ebook for a few reasons. I thought I knew what it would say, and I did know most of it, but there were a few key ideas that I think really mattered. For example, you never ask the child if they need to go potty but instead you remind them to tell you when they need to go. It puts the responsibility on them to learn when they need to go. It also gave me the confidence to try to go without diapers at naps and nighttime even though Kiran had not been waking dry. Kiran started off beautifully at nights and naptimes. We've had a few setbacks but she's bounced back. When she was fighting off an illness a few weeks ago (remember when she was taking those long naps?) she was waking up wet every morning, even when I took her potty right before I went to bed. I *almost* put her back in diapers for nighttime. I really wondered if I had pushed too hard or was expecting too much. I contacted the ebook's author and she gave me a few tips to try plus the encouragement that illness really can cause a setback and sure enough Kiran went right back to staying dry. That's the biggest reason I suggest buying the ebook- you get access to the author. I contacted her twice with two different problems. I received timely advice that worked both times.
Kiran has done really well lately with few accidents but TODAY was a big milestone. This morning around 5 am, Kiran got up and went to the potty on her own before she wet the bed! Normally she sleeps all night and wakes up dry but today was the first time she went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She sat on the toilet and yelled until I came but she avoided an accident. I'm so incredibly proud of her.
There's our potty training story. I'll be glad to answer any questions you have about our experience. I just wanted to throw out another method of potty training that worked for us.

Ok, well, you've got my interest peaked. I've been thinking I would have Asha potty trained for over 6 months! She's been using the potty to go #2 for that long (since June!) but #1 has been a long, long, looooonnnnng battle. I've been cleaning up pee-pee accidents for so long, but I just really want her potty trained completely!
She's had lots of breakthroughs this week, including going outside of the house without a diaper and not having an accident! But today, she went on the floor in her room.
Sigh...so I'm definitely going to check out that book - and since you said it's available as an ebook, I might just buy it :)
So... I haven't wanted to post anything about it, but we're in the end of the 3 days right now :) The book and author are great! My friend used this a while back, so I totally wanted to try it. Anyway, since Aashini is under 22 months then it's supposed to take a little longer. We started about 1pm on the first day (Because it was Holi) so we've really only done 2.5 days, but I think she's getting it. She has been potty trained going #2 since she was 11 months, but the #1 thing has been ... uhhh... let's just say that I'm glad that I have marble floors :) haha!
she's getting better, but we've been wondering why we didn't take the author's advice and wait a little longer - haha! She only had 4 accidents in the last 24 hours - so not too bad :) I'll keep you posted!!
um, aashini is WAY under 22 months!! I can't believe she's so close!
kelley - you say kiran was showing signs of readiness? what signs? I know I am outmind myself as a mommy doofus here, but like you - I am dreading it - and I don't know if I am just in denial about signs too. I was thinking we'd try this summer or even next summer (so the preschool people don't have to worry about it), or I guess over christmas, but I have no idea when to start and to be honest I am a little overwhelmed at the thought.
how did having another baby around affect kiran's willingness/ability to be a big girl?
So glad to hear a success story! I've been wondering how we're gonna do it, too, and now that both you and Andrea are recommending the ebook, I'm thinking we'll be trying it out too. I guess the big question is when to try...
I have a friend whose daughter is 3 and just this week had kind of a breakthrough. I hear stories like that and it makes me really nervous for the transition. We're going to wait a couple of more months but give it a good go this summer. I'm definitely interested in checking into this when that time comes.
Kiran was def telling us she was ready- but I can hardly remember details. I know she would tell us a couple times a day that she needed to go potty and almost every time she would actually go. She wasn't keeping her diaper dry between those times though. She knew how to do #1 and #2 in the potty. I guess those were the main ones. Oy my brain forgets everything now.
Em- this author seems to think 22 months is the prime age. And thinking back- K prob would have be totally ready then but I birthed Sienna 2 days shy of her 22 month birthday so... no-go. I waited till S was almost 5 months old but if I had known it was going to be that easy, I would have tried sooner. I was really dreading it. Eventually I put it on my calendar so I would have to do it.
Erin- we didn't really see much regression to baby things in Kiran. For one week soon after Sienna was born, K mysteriously had to go potty every time I sat down to nurse Sienna. But that phase didn't last too long. Thankfully.
One of Kiran's worst times was at Natalie's house! It got better quickly from there. She had one wet day at MOPS but that's all the accidents for being out. I haven't had to mop up any aisles at Walmart. Yet.
We tried the night time thing. It didn't go as smooth for us. I am jealous. Oh well. She sleeps so hard at night I couldn't get her to wake up like it told us to! She is still wearing pull ups at nap and night and she wakes up wet both times.
Way to go Kiran!!! You are a champ!
