Dairy and Tomatoes

I've had a few people ask me about Sienna's desire to be held all the time and sleeping stuff lately so I realized I should update. Around 6 weeks, she really turned a corner. I think there is a natural maturation around 6 weeks for all babies but also around that time we finally figured out she is really sensitive to dairy and tomatoes in my diet. When I eliminate those two things from my diet, she is a completely different baby. She goes to sleep nicely in her swing, she naps for 2-3 hours at a time, she is happy and content when she is awake. She stopped screaming in the car. Well not that one. But even that improved. She now only screams about 50% of the time compared to ALL. THE. TIME. She has turned into a fabulous sleeper (she slept from 9pm-7am last night but now that I told y'all that she won't do it again for a long time I'm sure) and a really smiley baby.

However, eliminating dairy and tomatoes from my diet has cut out probably 90% of my recipes. We are eating a lot of meats, rice, beans, vegetables, fruits, and carbs. But its getting old fast. Please share any ideas for meals that don't have dairy or tomatoes in them. You don't have to share a whole recipe or anything- just the idea will be graciously received. We are ready for some variety.

I just emailed you some recipes... one thing I forgot to say is that you can search online for vegan recipes - you'll find anything non-dairy you need!

I drank a lot of soy milk when I was nursing b/c of similar problems...

My sister is a vegan - so no dairy... and so I've learned that they have substitutes for everything!! There's soy cream cheese and soy-based dairy ANYTHING! If you go to a Whole Foods type store - or even a fancy grocery store - I'm sure you will find something :) My mom used to make my sister homemade ice cream when she was little and allergic to milk - she used something called "soy dream" for that ;) Any recipe I sent you that has milk in it, you can replace with soy milk and you can't tell the difference (unless you accidently get the vanilia soy milk - then it tastes weird)....

I've been meaning to tell you that after you said that you had eliminated tomatoes and that had helped, that I tried the same thing with Jordan. I wasn't sure that was the case until I ate some ketchup without thinking and she had a horrible day and a half! For her I think it's concentrated amounts of tomato. Thanks for the idea! And I'm excited to see what people say! We have been doing alfredo sauce with pasta and you could substitute soy milk for that.

We makes pitas a lot. Just get pita bread, cut it in half and open it to make a pocket. We stuff it with different things - last night we had chicken caesar pitas with grilled chicken strips, parm cheese (you can leave this off on yours), romaine lettuce, and caesar dressing. My favorite way to do them, though, is to get about 4 differnt types of sandwich meat, cube it and mix it up, and stuff it in the pita with cheese, tomato (obviously, you would leave that part off), lettuce, onion, and Italian dressing. You could probably think of a million different ways to stuff pitas.

so glad to hear she is doing well now. i relate to cutting things out of your diet, too. although now the doc thinks e might have reflux. if that is it, i'll be so glad to eat like a normal person again.

Mexican: fajitas, tacos
Seafood: crab cakes, fried catfish, shrimp brochette, grilled fish
All kinds of salads. Then you got fried okra, corn, Chinese stir fry, BBQ and grilled stuff.

You're right it's hard!! For as good as nursing is for the baby, sometimes it's so frustrating! Her 3 month mark is coming up - let's all pray her little tummy matures some more.

You guys had some great suggestions. I never even thought about soy. I really miss cheese and sour cream and ice cream. I'm hoping that the upcoming three month mark helps us out and means I can get back to regular scheduled eating.

I'll have to think about it, too... those are two staples in our house.
