Christmas Stockings

*courtesy of Pottery Barn

I have NOT been listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving unlike some people (ummerrittum) but I have been thinking about Christmas some. I can't even remember what Christmas decorations we own because they have been packed in a box and sitting in an attic for the last two Christmases. I haven't gotten them down yet but I know we have two stockings from before we moved overseas.

I guess my question is How do you buy stockings? I want to have cute stockings but not too expensive. And how do you plan for your growing family? I mean before Kiran we needed two, this year we need three, next year we'll need four since that is how many of us there will be by then. Do I buy four? What if we decide to have another kid down the road? Do the adults have stockings at your house? Jonathan & I always have since we got married but growing up just us kids had stockings. Where did you get your stockings?

Four! Congrats! One day I am planning to use a pattern to make our stockings. That way they all look the same (different fabric) as our family grows. That is if you are really looking for ideas...you are a sly one!

haha You're funny, announcing it like that.

That's a good question, one I never thought beyond "marriage stockings." We've always made our stockings on a date night. We'd go buy the stuff and either make our own, or one year we made them for each other. (Poor James...that year I felt the need to explain to everyone that he made mine :) I don't know if we'll continue that for long, but definitely this year we can because Hazel won't care what her stocking looks like.

wait... WHAT???? You're pregnant!!! Whoa! Congrats! How far along are you?? When are you due? Are you sick? You can't just do that little hint announcement and not give me details!!! :) haha!

that's a fun way to tell. congrats again! i wanted to say again thanks for the heads up and most of all for being so sensitive to my situation. it means more than you will ever know.

how about this for an idea...do they all have to go together? what if you add one whenever you add a child and it represents where you are as a family at that time. so each time you look at them you remember when it was just the two of you...just the three of you...just the four of you. just a thought. i need things to match but it sounds like a good idea in theory. hehe!

That was fun. I was wondering when you'd be making your sly little announcement. You're so fun!

My husband has had us listening to Christmas music for a week now.

We make our stockings. I'll have to send you a picture. Everyone in our family makes them the same way (from grandparents on down) so when we're all in town, they all are the same design. It's neat. They are easy to make and not nearly as expensive as the ones from Pottery Barn!

Oh-and we used to make ours. We, as in my Mom. Then when the sisters-in-law came, she took the same pattern. Somehow, though, Brett just got a stocking from Kohls or something. And now the grandkids have random fun ones. I'm okay with having different ones for the family, so long as the stockings are about the same size. There might be some sibling rivalry later on if Kiran's stocking is bigger than BabyFace's stocking.

Well, now you know that people read carefully! :)

My mom made ours growing up - from the same fabric and pattern so they all matched.

A couple of years ago, I found some stockings I really liked at Target, so I bought 6, thinking that would be plenty. Well, after Mark, me, Bowden, Simon, and now Nathan have them - there's only one left. Does that mean that I only get to have one more kid?

Oh! And you and J DEFINITELY need stockings. I'm sad for you that your parents didn't have them growing up. It sort of sends the message that Christmas joy goes away when you're not a kid anymore, don't you think? Plus, when the kids are old enough, it's really fun to surprise mommies and daddies with fun stocking stuffers - you don't want to deprive your little ones of that, do you?

I thought I missed a post too! That's awesome! Congratulations! If you get some good ideas on how to get 4 matching stockings... let us know ;) We'll be needing 4 too!

I bought ours at World Market. They were cheap and cute--knitted. We first bought 2 but the next Christmas they still had them so we bought 2 more (now wishing we'd bought 3!) but since they are knitted, I'm going to take one to a yarn store here and see if they can make a 3rd like it. All 4 are a little different but match. Growing up, ours were made of felt with patterns on them. My grandmother made everyones. They are pretty cool and BIG!! Fun for a kid! Congratulations again!!!

So, I'm a little behind and just found your blog. Where have I been. Heard your news from Beth...CONGRATS! When are you due?

About the stockings, I've had fabric for over a year and will one day make stockings for our family. When that will actually happen remains to be seen.
