One of These Days...

...I'm going to remember that I have a blog and update it.

But today I'm just looking for the book Don't Make Me Count to Three by Ginger Plowman. Does anyone have this that I can borrow?

A friend just gave me that book - I haven't read it yet and I'm definitely not in borrowing distance :) haha! I don't know anything about the book - what have you heard?

I have it waiting on my shelf too, but I'm with Andrea--not in borrowing distance. I am currently reading another book by her called Heaven at Home. Its worth reading if you haven't. Certainly a few things to take away from it!

Andrea--I know that books by this lady are recommended by Mark Dever and Tedd Tripp is her editor (author of Shepherding Your Child's Heart--which is quite good). She also quotes Sande in the book I'm reading and I know the 9Marks guys recommend him too.

I'm like 50th in line for it at my library (which has like SEVEN copies that are all always checked out, everywhere in the county).

can you get it from your library?

Read it multiple times and am a big fan. i'm not in close borrowing distance, but I'm willing to mail it to you. Think you could have it read and back by the end of Dec? Do you like deadlines? :) I'll definitely want to take it with us.

Also, I recently read Grace-Based Parenting and I think it's incredible. It has changed a lot of my thinking as a parent (hopefully actions too...at least working on it). I highly recommend it, Don't Make Me Count to 3, and Shepherding a Child's Heart as my top 3 parenting books.

I'm also reading Instructing A Child's Heart (by Tripp) right now. I didn't have the best models of parenting growing up and need lots of help and grace (praise the Lord God's a giver of grace) when it comes to parenting. Let me know if you know of or have read any others.

I've heard its a more practical Shepherding A Child's Heart.

I've checked Sp and Gr Counties and neither of them have it. I was surprised because between the two its rare they don't have a book I'm looking for.

I am a fan of Dr. Tim Kimmel and Grace Based parenting as well. We also went through "Raising Kids for true greatness"
would love to hear your take on the book you mentinoned in your post

I would buy it...but I like it! We sent it over to the Shefs and to some others...that's how much I like it. But, again, you know how parenting is. Everybody does it differently. But, I would say if you like Shepherding a child's heart then, the principles are the same, but it's way more practical and I think you'll like her humor. And, it's very biblically based.

Another thing she mentions in the book that I really like and have as a tool is the Wise Words for mom. It's a chart of scripture that you teach and instruct your child in (after discipline--and I guess proactively as well). It has issues like lying, complaining, tattling, etc (just for examples) and then it has questions to probe to get to their hearts, "put off/stop" scripture and then "put on/positive" scripture. It's only $3 or 4. You could do it on your own and there are examples in the book (like 5), but the tool is pretty great and it has I think about 30 or so different areas to address.

Grace Based Parenting was so good to me, it really did change even my thoughts of how I go to the Lord and my personal relationship, and also parenting. It's more principle than practical. Right after I finished reading it, I went back skimming through what I had underlined.

I've been wanting to respond to some of your "what have you been reading posts," but just haven't. I read so much and bought so many books this summer with birthday $. I'm very much a non-fictional reader, not really into fiction, so I'm no good in that area at all!!!

I hope this is helpful.

Okay, I'm so not good at book reviews...I'll stop now.
