Actually Rob was not a roommate, but a close friend and groomsman in our wedding. He has a new book coming out in April - Higher Hope: Tides of Truth, Book 2.
As for books, I highly recommend Unlimiting God by Richard Blackaby. I'm less than halfway through it but it will really show you how to have a deeper, more fullfilling relationship with God.
Oh good- Deeper Water was the first book in that Tides of Truth series. I really liked it so I look forward to reading #2.
I loved the time travellers wife. I'm glad you liked it too. :)
I tried to read the shack. I was borderline terrified about nathan disappearing on vacation, and borderline annoyed that the writing wasn't better considering how massively popular it is. I didn't even finish it, which is RARE for me. anyway... not for me.
I just started twilight last week. we'll see.
I'm the same as Erin G - the beginning of The Shack just terrified me to tearful prayers ("Please God spare us that pain!!") and then the rest of it was good, but not great in my opinion. But I have heard it's revolutionizing how people view God (and Jesus and the Holy Spirit :) so I can't say anything bad about it in the end.
I wanna read the third book in the Mark of the Lion series this year. Can't seem to find it in the library though. And I'm still on a mission to get James to read it. I've heard many hubbies reading it after their wives said it was so good that they've enjoyed it as well. I do recommend other Francine Rivers if you haven't already read them (Scarlet Thread and Redeeming Love especially)
No other recommendations from me...I'm a shallow reader.
I like your book review blogs!!
The last half of The Shack is where all the good theological issues to think about are. I'm not saying I agree with it all- but it def made me think about issues I hadn't thought about before. So just skip the first half and go straight to the second half if you ever pick it up again.
Twilight = good just overhyped
I haven't read any of those books! haha! Although, I have a feeling I may have to read "Raising Your Spirited Child" :)
For 2009... well, on my list:
1. Marrying Anita Jain (story about an Indian woman that lives in America and is very western and goes to India to find a husband - it's supposed to be interesting, I got it for Christmas) :)
2. "How to Read the Bible Book-by-Book" by: Fee & Stuart (I've read "How to REad the Bible for All it's worth" by the same authors and I thought it was great. It's simple and practical... so I'm excited :))
3. The New John Grisham Book (I bought it but haven't read it yet - I usually like his books)
I have a whole stack... but that's all I can remember right now :)
I'm kinda embarassed to admit that I just haven't been able to get back into reading since college. Since Furman I have read the Harry Potter series, Marley and Me, and the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. And I think that's it. Just 9 books- sad.
andrea - who wrote anita jain? I'd be interested in readng that too. I became very interested in the east-meets-west culture clashes with India when I took a class in college on south asian english lit. let me know!
Love the Mark of the Lion series (though the 3rd book was kind of strange - a little less believable than the first two).
I'd recommend Don't Make Me Count to Three. It's been the most helpful parenting book so far.
I've got my nightstand cabinet full of books to read this year - some to reread.
Happy reading, Kelley!
Whitlow was a friend of Geralds...crazy. I read The List recently. It was okay.
I am trying to read more--On my second since the holidays! Nursing school about did me in for reading. I am now coming out of the funk! I think I will try the Mark of the Lion series. I have heard nothing but GREAT things about it!
If you want an autobiography, read Clarence Thomas' "My Grandfather's Son". Gives you great appreciation for the work he has done, as well as other African Americans. It's an appropriate read especially now that we've got Obama as President.
Oh, so fun! I need to write my 2008 book post too, and you inspired me to do it soon. Other than the books I read last year that I'm about to blog about, I have two suggestions. I just read The Memory's Keeper's Daughter and loved it -- made me weep althoughout the book. And I just read The Blind Side, a great sports/race book (I'm a sucker for a good sports story).
I really liked Twilight, but then I wasn't expecting much. I figured it would be pretty dirty, and was surprised by how clean it is (until I saw that is was written by a Morman). I definitely want to read the next three in the series! I also liked the Shack too, for what sounds like the same reasons you did. And I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the March of the Lions series too. Wonderful!
I look forward to reading some of your favorite parenting books soon. I am counting on lots of nursing/reading time this next year like you've mentioned before!
And congrats on breaking the 3 mile distance on your runs! Way to go! I just jogged 2 miles today, the longest I've gone since being really pregnant, and it felt so good. I miss it!
I have to say I didn't think the third book in the Mark of the Lion trilogy was nearly as good as the first two.
Y'all have given me some great suggestions! I'm already starting to request them from the library!
Thanks emu- I'm feeling good! one more day of Couch 2 5K- I've been working on my blog post in my head for the past 3 runs. I'm really impressed that you jogged two miles with that baby in you!
