Ode to Spit Up

My twins are double the fun

This is totally true.

They also have double the spit up

to get all over you.

They spit up after nursing

and its just plain white.

But when they spit after baby food,

its colorful and bright!

It goes all over clothes,

bibs, hands and chins.

It goes onto my clothes,

my hair, my nails, my skin.

It drips on to the carpet

and coats the high chair trays.

I can’t keep blankets under them;

they up and roll away.

I find it around the circles

of the little lego toys.

And crusted in the plastic hair

of the Little People Boy.

I do too many loads of laundry

and a hot soak every night

Trying to keep the spit up

from ruining all in sight.

I warn everyone you see

“Watch out! They spit”

But warning isn’t enough

you gladly perform your bit.

I long for the day

when you wear the same clothes all day long;

you’ll keep them dry and not wet

from your gurgling song.

My heart is kind of tender

as we reach the end of baby days.

But for sure one thing I will not miss

is your crazy spit up ways.

Kelley! Oh, my word, I feel your pain. Isaiah was what they call a Happy Spitter, and there is nothing worse.

We have nasty dark spots on our carpet where "spit happened" and didn't get cleaned up fast enough or well enough and later on, after enough dirt got ground into it, became a permanent reminder of babyhood. :o(

JP never got used to the spit, and would have to change his shirt immediately. But after a while, I just wore eau de spit up with pride, because I didn't have enough clothes left to change them... Not to mention all the shirts you have to share with guests who don't believe your "He spits" warning.

I was cracking up about the coating on the legos, etc. When the baby toys came back out for Robbie, we were definitely like, "Oh, gross, you can tell Zay played with this!"

Isn't it depressing when they start spitting colorful babyfood?! I was totally holding out hope that real food would be different than milk... .

Isaiah spit till he was about 11 months. Robbie was not as bad as Zay, and I am literally praying that this one won't be either!

P.S. JP saw the picture at the bottom of your post and said, "Who are those angry people?" I told him and said, "The twins are spitters," and he instantly understood!

HA--think of the great reaction time you have developed! I have seen you jump sideways and backwards at record speed these days--:)

*raises hand* I am a victim of Rhys' spit up...but he's still so cute I'd hold him any day.

I'm totally impressed with your skills in writing this ode. My favorite part is about it being crusted on the legos and little people. It's amazing where I find spit up dried around here.

Hehehe. Too cute!

It seems boys are worse spitter-upers than girls. True? False?

Ah, so THAT'S how the spit up spots on our carpet ended up going dark! I was wondering that. Annabel was spit up so much, but goodness, TWO that spit up?? Wow that's almost enough to fill a poem.
Speaking of, you are quite the poet!

We have just concluded we are going to have to replace the carpet. And maybe the couch. The spit up gets everywhere!!! I can't wait until the end.

Kelley Phillips here :) I totally understand. Bryant is giving me (my only requested item) a carpet steam cleaner for Christmas. He wrapped up his gift by steaming all the carpets and upholstery while the kids and I were in VA this past week!

My sister bought a carpet steam cleaner and I have hijacked it and keep it at my house as much as possible!

I changed my google account name so we can distinguish ourselves from each other.

Love it! The boys were big spitters, too. Now they just vomit when they cough too hard...like W did last night. :)

Ditto. Feeling the pain. I think I might go ahead a get a steam cleaner.
