What do you listen to in the car? A friend asked me a while back what kids songs we listened to in the car and I just kinda stuttered that we don’t. The number one requested song in my car is “Revelation Song” sung by Kari Jobe (called Holy, Holy by the girls) and the number two requested song is “Jai Ho” from the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack.
But I have been thinking about what we listen to in the car. Honestly though, we don’t listen to CDs or the radio all that much. Or its turned way down. That time in the car is usually a fun time of “I Spy” and making up stories (Kiran’s new favorite thing). Do I sometimes want quiet in the car? Yep. Do I sometimes try to enforce that? I try. But most of the time the girls are talking and I enjoy interacting with them.
But I have taken our Seeds CDs out to the car and have been listening to them on the road some. We have these two and we love them (Thanks SIL!).
I was looking for my Sound of Music soundtrack to take but I realized if I had it in the car, we would never listen to anything else. Ever. We sing lots and lots of SofM songs even without the soundtrack.
My parents have some kids CDs that are about the different letters and the numbers and my kids love, love, love them. But I think Chief has limits on those. He probably makes them listen to Car Talk. I mean that’s what he did to me.
So what do you listen to in the car? I’d love some inspiration.

YIPEEE We love Seeds Family Worship. Its a great way to have some scripture over the day. We do listen to praise and worship too but not all the time. THe boys do love band music...MARCHING BAND like college fight songs. Ha
Our player is loaded with all five Seeds CDs. E loves some Hillsong too, but I LOVE the fact that she is now singing along with the scriptures and hiding it in her heart! Glad you are enjoying them too!
We listen to Cedarmont Kids! Stella LOVES it and it is sweet to hear her singing those songs:)
Oh man my dad also had like the fight songs compilation- I still sing them around the house sometimes I-O-W-A....
So a few years back we found the Cedarmont Kids videos on youtube- have you seen them? I'm pretty sure they were made in the early 80s but K used to LOVE to sit and watch them!
We are in love with Slugs and Bugs by Andrew Peterson. Hilariousness!
Hey...we don't have a car, but requested songs at our house include all the Seeds CDs as well as the Sovereign Grace Kids albums (Both Awesome God and Be Like Jesus). My kids actually like them more than Seeds and Brian and I really like them and the message. Another couple favs around here include Oh No You Never Let Go (Redman). And the Happy Song is a good one for kids.
Jai Ho is one of my faves to listen to at work. I love listening to Hillsongs CDs bc it's continous worship music. Also love Starfield with the windows down or Needtobreathe on long trips. Fave current Needtobreathe song is Something Beautiful. It's worth a listen. makes me cry.
Thanks for the ideas!
Rach- did you know J & I went to Furman with the guys from Needtobreathe?
I listened to Car Talk when I went home a couple weeks back....
Well... because i don't have kids, i rarely listen to kid music (although I got stuck on Tara Scheyer and the Mud Puppy Band when I was a nanny - super fun, folky kid music). I love love love that you talk to your kids more than you listen to music. I feel like so many parents miss that opportunity because they are talking on cell phones (shouldn't do that anyway), or just tuning their kids out. I love that story about Kiran asking the opposite of Texas... Oh the things you can teach your kids while riding in the car!
I hope I remember your wisdon ONE DAY when i'm a mom...
Love you, Kel!
My dad definitely made us listen to Cartalk! We would have been happy with anything but.... :o)
Um...well, save for one special week in preschool, we have NEVER listened to kid music in the car. We listen to the radio - I filter the songs, obviously. If it has even the remotest unbiblical message in a song, we don't listen. Hazel likes country and Christian music! :)
we love laura story's cd (from s'burg, worked w/campus outreach, leds worship in atlanta at perimeter church, has very faith-inspiring story with her husband), LOVE the sing over me lullaby cd, and i'm hoping to get the jesus storybook bible on cd. i've heard the voice is great on it and another mom recommended it to do in the car. we have the bible and we love it. -frances
I will admit to voluntarily listening to CarTalk a few times. I might even have enjoyed it.
Thanks Sarah D- you are sweet. There are def times I want to tune out but its usually worth it to turn in. The girls say the funniest things.
Emily-so what biblical country songs are your favorite?
ditto Laurie with Slugs and Bugs by Andrew Peterson and Randall Goodgame.
And, interestingly, the boys LOVE The Beatles' Abbey Road (especially Come Together, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, and Here Comes the Sun). With Ryan as their dad, are you surprised?! :)
We either listen to his radio, Beautiful is her favorite right now, or we listen to the Disney Pricess CDs. I also like to turn the radio down and talk to OK.
haha Kelley I like your question. Anything that doesn't involve divorce, a one night stand, revenge, or getting drunk.
Which obviously eliminates a large number of country music! haha Usually it's the fun summer songs or love songs.
i've never heard of Seeds. thx for sharing. we listen to 'Hide Him in your Heart' volumes 1 and 2
Go Fish is a great group that our kids love.
