First place we drove the Odyssey: Mark & Kandy's house
First CD played: Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack
First drive thru: CFA
First real errand: Dr's office for Sienna's (late) 9 month check up
Things I love about my new minivan
1. keyless entry
2. rear vents for the a/c
3. the cd player
4. I can put my jogging stroller in without taking the wheel off every single time
5. the back seat folds down into the floor
6. how Kiran says "ooooh I like our new car" every time we get in or how she points out every van we pass and says "Look Mommy! They have a van too!"
7. tinted windows in the back
(p.s. This is the first blog post I've written on my new laptop! I feel a little overwhelmed with a new van and a new laptop in 2 days. I'm not used to making big purchases. I feel like I have to explain myself since this is so unusual for our frugal family. First of all, the van is a 2000 with over 100,000 miles but its perfect for us. The laptop, however, is not used and it cost a lot of money. We had been saving for both for a long time; it just happened that we needed/wanted them at the same time. Now I'm saving for that digital SLR...)

FUN!!! That's great :) I'm sure that will make life much easier. Congrats!
OK, so in case you want my opinion :) haha! Don't get the SLR unless you are planning on bringing it with you everywhere you bring your camera with you now. I had a smaller camera and my SLR and I would always bring the smaller one with me b/c it was smaller and more convenient. Then I realized that the only SLR pics I took were at the house, so it was wasted. So... unless you plan on bringing it everywhere (even though it's big), then a smaller camera might be better....(does that make sense?)...just my opinion :) I'm super frugal and hate to waste money :) haha! :)
Anyway, love the car and congrats on the laptop :) What kind of laptop did you get?
i learned to drive on a minivan. i can only hope kiran and sienna get to experience the same joy. there's nothing like pulling into your high school in your parents' sweet minivan.
Of course I want your opinion- isn't that what blogging is all about???
I think that is a very valid point about the SLR. Right now, our camera is already kinda big- it doesn't fit in my purse. We are used to taking a camera bag with us so I think I will take it with me (almost) everywhere I take my camera now. Plus I take a ton of pictures out in our backyard.
And somehow, Jules, you managed to retain your coolness. I hope K & S don't learn on *this* van because that would make it um 24 years old at that point!
is the SdM soundtrack good? I liked the movie, and I like my "sounds of india" CD that I got from 10,000 Villages, maybe this would be good in my car? Is it mostly songs, or score? I am always on the hunt for things I can listen to with the beast in the car. which sometimes means NO words at all.
did your other car not have a cd player? You mentioned playing cd's twice, so I thought I should ask. :)
you owe NO explanation on the money thing. (but like you said, blogging is opening the floor to other people's opinions, so you're going to get mine anyway, and here goes...) I think you two are some of the smartest money people around. The fact that you two own a home, own your cars (or do you have a payment on the van now?), have no debt, tithe, AND do it on one salary so you can be home with the girls... well that's just inspiring. (sorry, did I just say a bunch of stuff about your family budget on the internet that I shouldn't have? you have the option to delete the comment, so if that was supposed to be private, delete away.)
since I am having more and more peace about leaving my job when beanie comes, I plan to call you to glean all the info about re-budgeting that I can.
I think it's awesome you have a new car and laptop, and I think the reason you could get both in one week is that you ARE smart with money and don't normally do stuff like that. :)
I love the SM Soundtrack. It does have words though. I didn't love Indian music while I lived there but to me, this cd is a good blend of Western and Indian style music. And there's even a Spanish verse on Jai Ho.
This is the first car I've ever owned that has a CD player. So I'm a little excited.
Thanks for your opinion Erin :) We do not have a payment on the van but I do have a little student loan debt still. Its consolidated at 2% so we aren't aggressively paying it down. Right now we feel we can earn more in interest.
To us, its all about choices. But we try very hard to make choices that align with our priorities and that fit with our family.
Have you played a Rascal Flatts or JoDee CD? Because you definitely should. I think the van looks great!
I haven't Merritt. I can't wait for you to come visit and we can cruise in my minivan and play music that was popular in the 90s. We are cool.
I was gonna say the same thing about not needing to justify to us, your loyal blog readers, about your "extravagant" purchases. But then I realized I would feel compelled to do the same thing. Anyway - sounds like y'all made a very wise decision - from what I've heard, buying a new car is almost always a waste of money anyway.
